Long Screenshot vs Scrolling Screenshot: What Is the Difference?
These two terms are often used to mean the same thing, but there is a small difference worth knowing, especially if a feature on your phone is not doing what you expected.
Scrolling screenshot
A scrolling screenshot is captured by a single built-in feature that automatically scrolls the screen for you while recording, then stitches the result into one image. This is what phones like Samsung and many Android devices offer through a "capture more" or "scroll capture" button right after you take a screenshot.
Long screenshot
A long screenshot usually refers to the end result: one tall image, however it was made. It might come from a built-in scrolling capture feature, or it might be assembled manually from several separate screenshots joined together afterward. In everyday use, people say "long screenshot" to describe the final tall image, regardless of the method.
Which one should you use?
- If your phone or browser has a built-in scrolling screenshot feature and it works well for the app you are using, that is usually the fastest option.
- If the app is not supported, such as most chat apps on iPhone, or the built-in feature does not capture cleanly, take a series of overlapping screenshots and combine them with a tool afterward.
Which apps commonly need the manual method
Chat apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, social media feeds, and many third-party apps do not support automatic scrolling capture, since it depends on the app cooperating with the operating system. For these, taking a few screenshots while scrolling and combining them afterward is the reliable option.
